Free Osteoporosis Education/Screenings Feb. 20 at Vernon Hills Y

Vernon Hills, IL – Rosalind Franklin University Health System (RFUHS) staff will provide free osteoporosis education and screenings for women on Monday, Feb. 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Central Lake YMCA, 700 Lakeview Parkway, Vernon Hills. This will precede the regularly scheduled visit of RFUHS’s mobile health unit there that day.

The program will provide education, risk assessment and bone density screening for osteoporosis. There will be a group educational session covering risk factors and what can be done to help prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with osteoporosis.

Family Disco Date Night Feb. 11 at Vernon Hills Y

Fathers/daughters and mothers/sons can spend some quality time together during a family-friendly “date” night at Central Lake YMCA just before Valentine’s Day.

Disco Date Night takes place Saturday, Feb. 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Central Lake Y, 700 Lakeview Parkway, Vernon Hills. Parent/child (6 years and older) couples will enjoy an evening of dinner, dessert and dancing. Fees are $5/couple for Lake County Family YMCA members and $10/couple for community members.

New Lake County Family YMCA Program Gets Kids Into Fitness

A comprehensive new Lake County Family YMCA program for the New Year incorporates the energy, fun and happiness of music and dance into a fitness activity for boys and girls ages 4 to 12.

ZumbAtomic® is a dance-fitness workout set to the rhythms of music such as hip-hop, salsa and reggae. The emphasis is on kid-friendly songs and moves including basic dance steps and choreography along with games and healthy choices. It’s fun and easy to do with no prior dance or fitness experience required.

Vernon Hills Y Team Swims to Help Others Learn to Swim

Members of the Central Lake YMCA Turtles Swim Team succeeded in raising money not only for their own program but also to help cover the cost of swimming lessons for kids who might not otherwise be able to take them during Swim-a-Thon 2011, the team’s annual fund-raiser, Dec. 17 at the Vernon Hills Y.

In addition to helping cover the fees each Turtle team member must pay to enter a competitive meet, a portion of the $4,976.25 raised will be used to offset the cost of swimming lessons for needy children at the Y.

Waukegan Y Swimmers Rewrite Personal Bests at Wisconsin Invitational

Vernon Hills, IL – The journey was definitely the reward for the members of the Northern Lake YMCA Seahorse Swim Team who traveled to Brown Deer, Wis., on Dec. 9-11 for the 2011 Schroeder YMCA Finalist Invitational.

Tyler Howard led the team by breaking his own Boys 11-12 500-yard freestyle record, set last year in the same pool.  With more than 600 swimmers participating at the meet, the small pack of 15 Seahorse swimmers made sure they stood out in their events.

Waukegan Y Swim Team Hosts Invitational Meet

Although they failed to defend their first-place finish from 2010, the Northern Lake YMCA Seahorse Swim Team had a successful third-place showing at the Seahorse Invitational swim meet they hosted Nov. 6. Hastings Lake YMCA took first-place honors, followed by Foglia YMCA from Lake Zurich in second place. The Vernon Hills-based Central Lake YMCA Turtles team finished fifth.

Waukegan Y Launches Drill Team Program this Winter

Lake County Family YMCA is stepping up to provide a new drill team experience in the Waukegan area. Troy Smith, director of the North Chicago-based National Champion Jazz Steppers, and members of his award-winning team will participate in a Dec. 3 program showcase at Northern Lake YMCA, 2000 Western Ave., Waukegan to preview the exciting new activity he’s starting there in January.
